Course overview

“Supporting Neurodivergent Young People with Anxiety” is a practical, evidence-informed course for educators, SENCOs, pastoral staff, youth workers, and mental health professionals supporting neurodivergent adolescents. It explores how anxiety presents across ASD, ADHD, and PDA profiles, reframing anxiety-driven behaviours as meaningful communication rather than challenge and introduces Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAI) as a complementary, relationship-based approach to reducing anxiety, increasing engagement, and promoting emotional safety.

The course includes modules and will take 2-3 hours to complete.

What you will learn

The course covers key components including understanding anxiety in neurodivergent profiles and its links to sensory processing differences, recognising how anxiety can manifest through meltdowns, shutdowns, avoidance, masking, and physical or emotional distress, and identifying common environmental, social, academic, and internal triggers. Participants will learn practical, low-arousal support strategies such as low-demand language, visual supports, grounding techniques, sensory tools, and the thoughtful use of Animal-Assisted Interventions, alongside approaches for building trust and emotional safety through calm communication, predictable routines, and safe spaces. The course also includes guided reflection and action planning to help participants identify strengths and barriers and create a personalised, realistic plan for implementation.

By the end of the course, you will have a toolkit of actionable strategies, reflective exercises, and a personalised plan to support neurodivergent young people more effectively—helping them move from anxiety-driven meltdowns and shutdowns toward regulation, trust, and resilience.
