Neurodiversity and Animal-Assisted Interventions

This month, the world turns its attention to Autism, and at Elysian Academy, we're using this time to celebrate the incredible strengths neurodivergent individuals bring to the human-animal bond. Within the heart of neurodiversity is a simple truth - there is no such thing as a normal brain. This month, we're taking a closer look at how AAI creates unique bridges for individuals with autism, ADHD and other neurodivergent profiles.

Our focus isn't only on intervention, but also on inclusion. We're exploring how animals help us harness different perspectives and how, as practitioners, we can ensure each session is safe, inclusive and impact-focused.

Practitioner tip of the month:

Try a low-arousal approach to your session. Before getting started, allow the client 5 minutes to observe the animal from a distance. This parallel processing can help to reduce anxiety and build a safer foundation for the upcoming interaction.

We know that embracing difference is only the starting point. So how do we actually create spaces where neurodivergent young people can thrive?

Our latest Barn+ opinion piece is here to explore exactly that! This thought-provoking piece looks at the power of neurodiversity and how Animal-Assisted Interventions can be a game-changer.

Nick challenges us to look past the label.

Continue Your Professional Development with New Online Learning

If you're not quite ready to connect with our Level 3 award but still want to enhance your career, our online short courses are the perfect place to start. With CPD accreditations that you can add to your CV upon completion, here's some courses

Safe and Inclusive AAI for Diverse Learners

This course equips educators and facilitators with the knowledge and skills to design inclusive, safe, and culturally sensitive Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAI) in educational settings. Participants will learn how to adapt AAI activities for neurodiverse learners, students with physical or sensory needs, and those from diverse cultural backgrounds. The course covers practical strategies for accessibility, risk assessment, and ethical practice, ensuring that interventions are equitable, effective, and respectful of both students and animals. Through case studies, examples, and reflective exercises, participants will gain the confidence to implement AAI programmes that promote engagement, wellbeing, and inclusion for all learners.

Neurodivergent Clients and Animal Connections

In this programme, we share that expertise, exploring how Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAI) can support neurodivergent individuals of all ages, including those with autism, ADHD, sensory needs, or learning differences.

You’ll gain insight into neurodivergence and how it may present in different individuals, explore various therapeutic approaches involving animals, and learn how to design inclusive, flexible sessions that meet a range of communication, emotional, and social goals. Through planning guidance, real feedback from families, and examples from different settings, this course demonstrates how neurodivergent clients can thrive through AAI.

Supporting Neurodivergent Young People with Anxiety

Supporting Neurodivergent Young People with Anxiety” is a practical, evidence-informed course for educators, SENCOs, pastoral staff, youth workers, and mental health professionals supporting neurodivergent adolescents. It explores how anxiety presents across ASD, ADHD, and PDA profiles, reframing anxiety-driven behaviours as meaningful communication rather than challenge and introduces Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAI) as a complementary, relationship-based approach to reducing anxiety, increasing engagement, and promoting emotional safety.

As we move through April, let’s remember that neurodiversity isn't a challenge to be managed; it’s a perspective to be celebrated. Animals have known this all along. They don’t look for "deficits," they look for connection. We’re committed to helping you do the same.

Question of the month: Are all animals suitable for animal-assisted interventions?

No. Only domesticated, well-socialised, and healthy animals are considered appropriate for AAI sessions. They must be trained with humane methods and carefully evaluated to ensure they can safely and comfortably participate in human‑focused activities.

That’s a wrap for this month! Stay curious, stay kind, and we’ll be back soon with more good news, great learning, and great animals.

All the best,

Hannah at Elysian
